View ProductsReciprocating Air compressors employ pistons moved by a crankshaft for compressing air. The compressing air decreases its volume and increases its density. The pistons move away from the intake valve which results in gas moving backward into the gas cylinder where it entered earlier- fulfilling the “reciprocating” name. Now the air is compressed. When the cylinder’s interior pressure is more than the pressure in the discharge pipe, the valves open and the air exits the cylinder. The air is either used by a pneumatic machine or stored in a compressed air tank.
Reciprocating air compressors work on the norms of reciprocation, the term reciprocation meaning the movement from backward to forward in a straight line. They are also known as piston compressors. They operate under the positive displacement mechanism which means, the machines are designed in such a way that the pressure of air is increased before it is compressed. Various designs and types of compressors are available in the market, at Pattons we have the expertise and knowledge to help you choose the right model that best suits your application.
Reciprocating Air compressors are used in many business ranging from small to medium size. Let’s have a look on common compressor uses.
Compressors are used in sandblasters in factories, automobile spray painting equipment, artificial snow manufacturing machines that are used in recreational industries, dental tools, pneumatic tools which are used in the construction industry and so on. Apart from businesses, the agriculture industry also uses compressors in conveyors that help in grain movement, ventilators that are used in hydroponic systems and so on. Large businesses also use compressors in air tools and automated machinery, welding or cutting equipment, molding gas tanks and plastic bottles, pneumatic finishing and packaging devices.
How do reciprocating air compressors evaluate against rotary screw and centrifugal compressors, and what features and benefits needs to be considered?
Rotary screw compressors have a couple of screws for compressing the air whereas the reciprocating compressors engage pistons moved by a crankshaft. Air receiver tanks in reciprocating compressors store air and remove pulsation before it runs the connected application. A rotary screw compressor delivers a stream of continual air without any disruption or pulsation hence the units don’t require a tank.
The number of components in a reciprocating compressor such as valves, crankshafts, rods draws attention towards regular maintenance when compared to the two screw parts that are used in rotary screw compressor. However, the parts are less expensive and have an overall low maintenance cost.
Equipment longevity depends upon the heat generated during the operation of a compressor. A rotary screw compressor produces less friction since the screws rotate without touching each other. The temperature is around 80 – 99 degrees Celsius. The reciprocating air compressors operate at a temperature ranging between 150 – 200 degree Celsius. The movement of piston rings against the cylinder wall causes friction that results in high temperature. Reciprocating compressors hence have greater maintenance requirement.
Reciprocating compressors are one up in terms of pressure produced. A reciprocating compressor has the capacity to produce double the pressure of a rotary screw compressor.
A reciprocating air compressor does not have an oil filtration system hence there are chances of residual oil contamination air compared to oil lubricated screw compressors that are designed with three stage oil filtration.
Reciprocating compressors are preferred by industries that have very high pressure requirements, easy availability of spare parts and lower duty cycle.
